“Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, as well as following an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of sentient animals.  A follower of veganism is known as a vegan.

Distinctions are sometimes made between different categories of veganism.  Dietary vegans (or strict vegetarians) refrain from consuming animal products, not only meat but, in contrast to ovo-lacto vegetarians, also eggs, dairy products and other animal-derived substances.  The term ethical vegan is often applied to those who not only follow a vegan diet, but extend the vegan philosophy into other areas of their lives, and oppose the use of animals or animal products for any purpose.” – Wikipedia

So why should you become a vegan?

If someone told you that through your diet you could be the healthiest you have ever been, avoid almost all illness, no sentient being would die for your meal, and you would be saving the planet at the same time, would it interest you?  I sincerely hope the answer is yes to that question.  This can be your reality, it can be achieved through a vegan diet.  The list of benefits do not stop there, allow me to explain…

It is the best way to help animals:  Over the course of their lives vegans will save thousands of thinking and feeling beings from a terrible fate.  In fact, becoming a vegan will spare the lives of over 100 sentient beings per year.  That number is on the low side.  Do the math and imagine the incredible impact you could make saving the lives of other beings, and how amazing that would feel.

Become a happier and much healthier you:  Through veganism you can reclaim your health.  Most western disease is entirely preventable, even reversible, through a plant-based vegan diet, including heart disease and many types of cancer.  Also, multiple types of cancer have been linked directly to the consumption of animal products.  Reclaim your health through veganism.  As a vegan you can enjoy a larger quantity of raw fruits and vegetables, and you will be introduced to hundreds of exciting new types of food.  More energy, a slimmer waistline, better sleep, greater immunity and health, and happiness have all been commonly reported results of a healthy vegan diet.

Help save the planet:  Vegans are heroes, we really are!  When we are not saving the lives of thousands of sentient beings, we are busy saving the environment.  No, you don’t have to literally go out and do anything special to save the environment, though that is great too.  All you really have to do is become a vegan.  Deforestation is destroying the planet, and it is being done to raise more livestock for food consumption.  It takes on average 13 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of meat.  That grain could be used to feed starving people and animals all over the world.  It requires less land to produce enough fruits and vegetables to feed us all, which means destroying less of the planet.  Livestock farming also contaminates the air, and water, and what we are doing now, the way we are doing it, is simply not sustainable.

Meat is disgusting, vegan food is awesome:  Have you ever stopped to consider a few very strange things we do as humans?  Meat is disgusting.  It is comprised of veins, tendons, and other really gross things.  Eggs, that is a cute name for eating the menstrual cycle of a chicken.  We really enjoy using buzz words to make really strange and disgusting foods and traditions sound completely normal.  How about that Thanksgiving turkey?  Each year millions of people carve the anal cavity out of a dead bird, then stuff dead pig and bread into the cavity, bake it, and eat it!  It was Gary Yourofsky that really helped to open my eyes and I recommend checking out his work.  Now on to vegan foods.  Every single thing you are used to eating can be made vegan, and it still tastes great.  So becoming a vegan doesn’t have to feel like you are giving up what tastes good.  However, you do not have to focus on foods you are accustom to.  One of the beautiful things about becoming a vegan is the amazing new foods you will discover during your journey.  Fantastic foods that taste amazing, nourish your body, and best of all, nothing died for it to make it to your plate.

So what can I eat then?

I am sure some of you may not be excited about the idea of giving up meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products.  My hope and dream though is that you do just that.  I promise you it really is not that difficult.  Many others have come before you and paved the way.  Many wonderful companies have come along to aid you in  your journey, and to support the vegan way of life.  Companies like Tofurkey, Tofutti, and Gardein, just to name a few, are all here for you, and they all provide fantastic meat free and dairy free options.  It gets better, did you know desert is covered too?  There are many options for you, like soy ice cream and coconut milk ice cream.  Even milk is available in the form of soy milk, hemp milk, oat milk, hazelnut milk, rice milk and almond milk.  Many restaurants are springing up to support veganism as well.  Even some of the more mainstream food locations have vegan options, you probably just didn’t realize it.  For example, Papa Johns, Little Caesars, Dominos, Taco Bell, and Subway, to name a few, all have options for you as a vegan.  My hope is that you eat considerably more natural fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans that you do any type of processed or fast food.  Let’s face it though, sometimes life is busy, or sometimes we are running from place to place.  In those cases sometimes you just need to know how to order.  Please do not be discouraged.  We will explore that and more here at SharingVeganism.com.

Not a good enough reason yet?

Is being healthier, living a longer happier life, reversing and preventing disease, saving the planet and ending world hunger not enough of a reason for you to become a vegan?  If that is the case, then please, PLEASE consider ethics alone and stop this madness.  Please help me, and other vegans around the world, put an end to the rape, murder and exploitation of BILLIONS of sentient beings each and every year.  If you just take a moment to consider what is happening, you will discover it is madness and it is 100% wrong.  One day we will look back on these dark times the same way we do with other atrocities in our past, and realize we were wrong, so very wrong.  I implore you not to wait until that day comes…
